Onyx is a handsome, exuberant, big, strong male with much potential in the right home where his training will need to continue. He would be well suited to a rural home with lots of outdoor space and an experienced active owner.
He has been trained by his current owner and is fairly responsive but is very easily distracted and environmentally sensitive and easily over-aroused, so more work is needed to improve his focus and social skills in particular He needs an experienced owner to continue his education as an adolescent entire male, and he is a big lad!
He is not good with strangers in his home environment, so he would need several meets as part of the rehoming to get to know and build a relationship with his adopter. He was fine with me on approach and meeting him as a complete stranger when I assessed him in an outdoor setting. He travels well and he is fully housetrained.
He loves other dogs but does need to be managed, as he is over-exuberant and on occasion exhibits frustration-based behaviour, making him vocal, so this is an area that will need much work. He does respond to his handler and is walked in a headcollar to give control. He is exercised off-lead in quiet areas and has good recall. Not suitable to live with cats.
We are looking for an experienced adult-only home for Onyx as an only dog or with a mature, trained, calm dog, but this would need careful consideration & introduction.
This is a sad rehoming and only done after much consideration and heartache and is felt to be in the best interests of Onyx, whose needs cannot be met. He is much loved by his current owner, so it is not an easy decision, so no negative comments, please – be kind.
You would need to be prepared to travel to do several meets with Onyx in the South Devon area. A home check will be required, and an adoption fee will be payable.
He is available for adoption to the right home through South West GSD Rescue – Forever Homes Wanted.
